Writer’s Workshop is an opportunity for students to become authors in a variety of genres. The workshop model increases the student’s ability to communicate and express their ideas clearly and creatively. The process is essential, as is the individual’s growth as a writer.
Course Description:
Students will use the Six Traits of Writing - generating ideas, organizing their thoughts, making thoughtful word choices, employing grammar conventions, speaking with their own voice, and increasing sentence fluency - as the framework for their lessons.
Students will write every session and experiment with a variety of writing styles and formats. They will work alone, in pairs, and in groups to edit and refine their pieces.
Grammar lessons occur within the organic process of writing. Students will have multiple individual conferences with the teacher to address usage and mechanics issues as needed.
Along with a writing journal, students will keep a writing binder that will have notes from lessons, handouts on writing, and examples of the various genre.
Grading:
Students grades come from their journal work, their individual and whole class grammar assignments, and their written pieces.
Weighting
Writing Journal: 30%
Individual and full class grammar assignments: 20%
Process towards finished pieces (from 1st draft to finished piece): 30%
Finished Pieces: 20%
